The red carpet drew much of the attention, accompanied by a comprehensive gallery of images to browse. Celebrities including Timothée Chalamet, Teyana Taylor, Archie Madekwe and Cillian Murphy made striking appearances, while an audience heckle — someone shouting “Is the monarchy in peril?” at Prince William — briefly punctuated the stroll.

Paddington also turned up, unbothered by a lack of nominations and continuing his onstage association with the prince. Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams used the night to make their relationship publicly visible, sharing a red-carpet kiss. Mescal wore Prada, with a deliberately crumpled shirt and threadbare cuffs, while Abrams chose a beaded floral dress from Chanel.

Fashion highlights ranged from Teyana Taylor’s trench with a dramatic ruff to Archie Madekwe’s Dior suit and sparkly collar. Erin Doherty favoured a Louis Vuitton gown with a scooped neckline and pleated skirt, and Timothée Chalamet opted for a pared-back charcoal Givenchy look that proved less meme-able than some of his previous choices.
