Benny Safdie skipped the Oscars to watch the Knicks
Benny Safdie skipped Oscar night to attend a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, even though his brother Josh’s film Marty Supreme was among the evening’s contenders. The movie was nominated for Best Picture and Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor, while Josh was up for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.
Marty Supreme left the ceremony without awards, while the Knicks beat the Golden State Warriors 110-107, a result that rewarded Benny’s decision. He was also seen signing autographs in Midtown Manhattan. The Safdie siblings co-directed five films, most notably 2019’s Uncut Gems; Marty Supreme was Josh’s solo follow-up.
Josh has said he and Chalamet bonded over a mutual “unhealthy” obsession with the Knicks. He has also recalled that their babysitter, a “scary, scary fan,” introduced them to watching games together. Hoops played a major role in Uncut Gems, and Kevin Garnett had a pivotal acting part.
