Season 27's episode "Frequency" echoed an earlier SVU rescue. A family's home video feed picked up a rogue frequency and revealed a young boy, Avery, trapped in a dog cage. Benson tried speaking through the feed but realized verbal contact might alert his kidnapper; the squad also learned Avery was non-verbal, which complicated the search.

Benson noticed Detective Jake Griffin (Corey Cott) throwing himself into the case after he stayed up to monitor the feed. Griffin, who had a brother who died at 15 and had autism, admitted he was seeing Avery as a sibling in need of saving. Benson pulled him aside, reminded him she needed him sharp, and said she'd worked a case "like this" before — the Season 7 rescue of Maria Recinos in "911," an episode that earned Mariska Hargitay an Emmy.

Benson later told Griffin, "The story is happy or sad based on when you stop telling it." She added, "She died in the line of duty, that girl." The unit followed leads that brought Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) to the doorstep of Costa Lykos (Eric Edelstein).
