LED face masks have surged in popularity despite being among the priciest at‑home beauty gadgets. Manufacturers promise reductions in fine lines, fewer spots and calmer redness, and some devices combine different light types to boost benefits. Given the cost, it pays to be sceptical and to do research before buying.

I spoke with doctors and dermatologists to see what the evidence shows. They say masks are not a miracle cure for deep‑set wrinkles but that red and infrared light can promote collagen production, improve elasticity and smooth skin with sustained use. Research from the 1990s supports light therapy for wound healing, acne treatment and skin rejuvenation, though blue light can worsen hyperpigmentation on darker skin tones.

To assess practicality, I tested fit, comfort and usability across 11 popular devices and consulted Dr Barbara Kubicka, Dr Derrick Phillips and Dr Priya Verma on the features that matter: bulb quality and quantity, wavelength and treatment time.
