Big Finish Announcement Rules David Tennant Out of 2026 Christmas Special
Big Finish has announced David Tennant will reprise the Tenth Doctor for a run of fifteen audio adventures, a move that makes a return as the Fourteenth Doctor in the 2026 Christmas special unlikely. The special’s script is being written by showrunner Russell T Davies, and it still hasn't been announced who will be leading the TARDIS this December.
Many fans had speculated Tennant might reappear as Fourteen after the 2023 bi-generation twist in "The Giggle," and the idea seemed plausible during a period of uncertainty for the series. Since Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor stepped away in 2025, the divisive return of Billie Piper stalled production; the spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea closed out the BBC's co-production deal with Disney, and the show was confirmed not to take a multi-year break.
Because Tennant is now set to feature in a new set of Doctor Who adventures in 2027, bringing him back on-screen as Fourteen in 2026 would likely feel like overkill.
