Biggest Bollywood Flops of All Time
Bollywood reaches almost 1.5 billion potential viewers and has been booming for over five decades, but with 100–200 films released each year not every project will thrive. Predicting the audience’s reaction is more art than science, and even films with big budgets and star names can crash when viewers don’t connect with the on-screen content.
Here are 20 of Bollywood’s biggest box office failures of all time. Salman Khan’s Tubelight (2017), inspired by Little Boy, opened strong but soon faltered, costing approximately $23 million and grossing only about $32 million. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish (2010), despite Hritik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s performances and memorable songs, suffered from a clumsy narrative and made $7.29 million on an estimated $8.92 million budget.
Akshay Kumar’s Joker (2012), a bizarre sci-fi from Shirish Kunder featuring UFOs and artificial aliens, grossed around $5.5 million against a $7 million budget. Sequels and remakes also struggled: Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!
