Bill Lawrence Explains J.D. & Elliot Twist in Scrubs

Bill Lawrence has responded to backlash over one of the most talked-about developments in the Scrubs revival: J.D. and Elliot are divorced in Season 10. The revival brings back original stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Neil Flynn, and John C.

McGinley, and the revelation about this central relationship left many disappointed and some threatening to abandon the new season. On X, Lawrence wrote: "Thanks for watching, regardless. This was a long discussion. We looked at the whole show... this is a reality for people 20 yrs later, and they were never a healthy, functional couple for more than 3 weeks.

And all dreams can't come true... But who knows, we could be wrong." The choice reflects the characters' history on the show. Across the original run, J.D. and Elliot were frequently dysfunctional, with J.D. repeatedly toying with Elliot's emotions; the decision to persuade Elliot to break up with dolphin trainer Sean Kelly at the end of Season 3 is a frequently cited example.
