Billie Eilish to Star in Sarah Polley's Adaptation of The Bell Jar
Billie Eilish will make her movie debut in a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath's novel The Bell Jar, with Sarah Polley directing. Eilish is set to play Esther Greenwood, the novel's protagonist, whose struggles with depression echo Plath's own experiences in the 1960s.
Plath died by suicide in 1963, shortly after the book's release. This will be only the second significant film adaptation. A 1979 version, directed by Larry Peerce and starring Marilyn Hassett and Julie Harris, holds a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes from eight reviews.
Later efforts—Julia Stiles briefly held the rights, and Kirsten Dunst planned to direct a version starring Dakota Johnson—never reached production, and a proposed Showtime limited series also lapsed. Eilish has won two Oscars for Best Original Song, for 'No Time to Die' and 'What Was I Made For?'.
