Bills fire Sean McDermott after latest postseason loss
Cbssports reports the Buffalo Bills fired coach Sean McDermott on Monday following a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round. The decision came after McDermott led the team to the playoffs eight times in nine seasons but was criticized for insufficient postseason success; he finished 98-50 in Buffalo and 8-8 in those eight playoff appearances.
General manager Brandon Beane will remain with the organization and has been given the title president of football operations/general manager; he will lead the club's coaching search. The Bills have a 73-27 record since 2020 and rank first in the NFL in points (29.0) and opponent points (19.9) per game, and Josh Allen developed into a top playmaker, but the team did not reach the Super Bowl.
Reactions from players and others were immediate. Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips posted, "This shit here is so stupid honestly sickening. The best coach I've ever been around." Shaq Lawson wrote, "Damn shit don't make sense. He changed the whole culture." Damar Hamlin thanked McDermott for what he did on and off the field, and DaQuan Jones posted, "Don't make sense but ya got what ya wanted." Owner Terry Pegula's statement began with "Sean has done an admiral job ...," a typo that drew notice, and former coach Jon Gruden said, "Now I'm really glad they lost the game." Beane will lead the search for McDermott's replacement, and the organization said it seeks a new structure within its leadership.
