Bills fire Sean McDermott after playoff loss to Broncos
Cbssports reports the Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday, less than 48 hours after the team's overtime loss to the Broncos. Owner Terry Pegula released a statement saying, "Sean has done an admirable job of leading our football team for the past nine seasons," and added that the organization needs "a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level.
We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia." McDermott finished nine seasons in Buffalo with a 98-50 record and led the Bills to the playoffs in eight of those nine years. He won eight postseason games, the most by any coach in NFL history without a Super Bowl appearance, but Buffalo repeatedly faltered in late-game situations: the team became the first in NFL history to lose three straight playoff games by three points or fewer, and in four of their past five playoff losses the Bills surrendered fourth-quarter leads.
The team and media coverage have pointed to a need for an offensive-minded replacement given Josh Allen's presence; potential candidates mentioned include internal option Joe Brady and external names such as Klint Kubiak, Nathan Scheelhaase, Mike McCarthy, Mike McDaniel, Kliff Kingsbury and a possible return for Brian Daboll.
