A bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers led by Senator Chris Coons met with Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederickson, in Copenhagen to reassure Denmark and Greenland that the United States supports Denmark’s control of Greenland despite President Trump’s vow to seize the island.

The visit came as Mr. Trump said he was considering using tariffs to pressure countries to accept a U.S. annexation of the semiautonomous territory. After the meeting, Mr. Coons said the United States was grateful to Denmark for being “a good and trusted ally and partner’’ and for the sacrifice of Danish soldiers who “served and fought and died alongside Americans.’’ He said he would support legislation to limit the president’s power to act unilaterally on Greenland and that the purpose of the trip was to listen, discuss developing the island’s resources and “lower the temperature.’’ The delegation included Senators Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis and Representative Steny Hoyer.

The visit followed public contradictions between Washington and Danish officials about what had been agreed in a White House meeting hosted by Vice President JD Vance. Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, said that despite a “fundamental disagreement” over Mr. Trump’s “wish of conquering Greenland,” a group would continue talks; the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said the delegation had agreed “to continue to have technical talks on the acquisition of Greenland.” Mr.
