Bloomingdale's hiring Saks and Bergdorf staff amid bankruptcy
Bloomingdale’s appears to be scooping up staff from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman as its rival faces financial strain. "They’re making huge offers to people from Saks, and people are quitting [Saks] left and right," a fashion insider said. Saks Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January.
Nearly two dozen Bergdorf employees have noticed significant unexplained deductions in their paychecks since Jan. 1, based on interviews with workers and an analysis of paystubs and internal emails. Designers are also looking to jump ship over unpaid bills. A Bloomingdale’s insider confirmed that, given the landscape, employees from competitors and several brands are coming to discuss opportunities, and the retailer is enjoying what it called "great momentum." The flagship 59th Street store has been undergoing a phased renovation, including a high-end luxury section on the fourth floor that features Chanel, Valentino, Erdem, Versace and Stella McCartney, and offers stylists like Wayne Scot Lukas.
