Despite drifting into obscurity, the artifact-wielding superhero Blue Beetle remains part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's vision for the DCU. Played by Xolo Maridueña, Jaime Reyes was introduced three years ago in Ángel Manuel Soto's film, which roughly broke even at the global box office.

The movie marked a cultural moment for the Latino community, with Maridueña becoming its first-ever member to lead a superhero picture. While promoting The Wrecking Crew, Solo said the Blue Beetle chapter is far from closed. He has had friendly conversations with Peter Safran and John Rickard, and noted that James Gunn is a big fan who has repeatedly said Blue Beetle is part of the DCU.

Solo added he would love to make Blue Beetle 2 and 3 and to continue working with Maridueña and the Reyes family. The director also said discussions have explored expanding the Reyes family's adventures through animation, a format he finds flexible and appealing, and that he would welcome pursuing that route if DC and Warner Bros.
