BMW to debut first electric M car in 2027 with four motors
BMW’s M division is preparing its first true electric M car for 2027, a model the company has been referring to as the M Neue Klasse and that will be propelled by four electric motors — reportedly one per wheel.
The car will sit on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform, a software-defined architecture that uses a handful of powerful computers to manage vehicle functions instead of many discrete control units. One computer handles infotainment, another automated driving and safety, and a third runs climate and body functions. A dedicated M computer, nicknamed the Heart of Joy, will run BMW M Dynamic Performance Control to manage the four motors.
BMW says previous M‑tuned electric variants such as the i4, iX, and i7 were not true M cars and “weren’t better than the cheaper, less powerful versions,” a shortcoming the company intends to correct with the new model. The car might be named the iM3 if BMW’s naming logic remains the same, but for now it is being called the M Neue Klasse.
Franciscus van Meel, managing director of BMW M GmbH, said the next generation of models “are set to establish a new benchmark in the high‑performance vehicle segment” and will deliver racetrack‑ready dynamics for everyday use. Enthusiasts are expected to learn more next year, while full specifications and the final name remain to be confirmed.
