BMX SolidSafe 5K: solid-state 5,000mAh wireless power bank focused on safety
ZDNET reviewed the BMX SolidSafe 5K, a 5,000mAh/19Wh wireless power bank that uses solid-state cells and is marketed as prioritizing safety over traditional lithium-ion designs. The unit measures 4.0 x 2.7 x 0.4 in (102.7 x 68 x 11 mm) and weighs 4.8 oz (137 g). It includes a magnetic Qi2 wireless charger rated up to 15W, a single USB-C port with up to 20W output and up to 15W input, and supports simultaneous wireless and wired output (up to 15W) plus pass-through charging.
A button and a clear color display show power levels and charge/discharge power, and the lanyard doubles as a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. ZDNET notes that solid-state cells replace the flammable electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a non-flammable solid and says they are "far less likely to catch on fire than lithium-ion batteries." The reviewer disassembled and punctured a fully charged pack with a screwdriver as a test, and reported only a few puffs of smoke, adding an admonition not to try that at home.
The SolidSafe 5K retails for $79.99 (a 10,000mAh version is $99.99, and 3-bay and 5-bay docks are $49.99 and $69.99).
