Time reports federal agents were involved in a shooting in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood that left an unidentified man and woman hospitalized, city police said. Portland police said officers first responded to a report of a shooting along Southeast Main Street at 2:18 p.m. Pacific Time and, six minutes later, received a separate call about a man shot near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside, about 3 miles away.

Officers found a man and woman with apparent gunshot wounds, applied a tourniquet and called emergency medical personnel; the victims were transported to the hospital and their conditions and identities remain unknown. An unnamed senior law enforcement official told CNN the two were husband and wife, and the FBI’s Portland office said in a since-revised statement it was investigating an “assault” on Customs and Border Protection agents.

The Department of Homeland Security identified the agents as U.S. Border Patrol employees. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said on X that agents were conducting a “targeted vehicle stop” and alleged the passenger was a Venezuelan “illegal alien” linked to a recent city shooting and to the Tren de Aragua prostitution ring; she said the driver then “weaponized his vehicle” and attempted to run over agents, after which an agent fired defensive shots and the driver drove off.
