Bouanani has struggled at VfB Stuttgart and risks becoming a costly flop
VfB Stuttgart remain in contention on all fronts and still eye Champions League qualification, but one summer signing has been a clear disappointment. Sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth had overseen several successful moves in recent years, yet last summer – after Nick Woltemade's exit and public criticism from coach Sebastian Hoeneß – the club brought in Badredine Bouanani (31 August, OGC Nice) and Bilal El Khannouss (1 September, Leicester City) within 72 hours.
El Khannouss's loan has been a success and will reportedly trigger an €18 million purchase obligation tied to playing time; Bouanani, signed for €15 million, has not delivered. The 21-year-old is the club's third most expensive signing to date and has managed two goals and one assist in 24 appearances.
He has played more minutes in the Europa League (448) than in the Bundesliga (441) and is still without a goal contribution in the German top flight.
