Kalifornia emerged from the '90s resurgence of horror and neo-noir as a dark, low-budget thriller that lets Brad Pitt shed his heartthrob image. Directed by Dominic Sena, the film pairs Pitt and Juliette Lewis as a violent couple who upend the cross-country trip of a city-living pair played by David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes, and it deliberately interrogates how American culture consumes serial killing as entertainment.

The story follows true-crime writer Brian Kessler and his photographer girlfriend Carrie Laughlin as they travel to notorious murder sites. Their ride-share picks up Early and his girlfriend Adele, and what begins as a shared road trip gradually unravels when Carrie notices Early's volatility and he launches a brutal killing spree.

Kalifornia unfolds as a slow burn that erupts into sudden, harrowing violence, including a memorably shocking gas-station scene. Pitt strips away charm to embody a southern, psychopathic killer, trading handsome stares for a grimy physicality and nervous ticks.
