Britons consume salt equal to 155 crisp packets a week, study finds
New research by the British Heart Foundation shows Britons consume the equivalent of 155 packets of crisps worth of salt each week, the Independent.co reported.
Working-age adults in England average 8.4g of salt daily, 40 per cent above the government's 6g recommendation. The research warns high salt intake significantly increases the risk of high blood pressure, which is linked to half of all heart attacks and strokes, and says most of the salt is hidden in processed foods.
The British Heart Foundation has urged the government to take urgent action to reduce salt in food. The Department of Health and Social Care says it is taking action through advertising restrictions, limiting promotions on unhealthy foods, and mandatory reporting on healthier food sales.
