Brock McGillis Marries Matthew Ward After a Decade Together
Brock McGillis, a former professional hockey player who came out publicly in November 2016, married Matthew Ward on Jan. 30 at the Windsor Arms Hotel in Toronto. About 150 guests attended the ceremony, which included vows, ring exchanges and an extended embrace after the couple’s kiss.
The two first connected on Grindr in January 2016, met in person that May and spent months talking by phone. Their relationship included a brief breakup in September 2017 that ended within a day; they moved into an apartment in St. Lawrence in 2019 and used the Covid-19 lockdowns to be together more often.
Mr. McGillis, who retired from hockey in 2010 and later coached, ran businesses in Sudbury and then moved into full-time public speaking on L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy and mental health, proposed in August 2024 at Barberian’s Steak House with a Polaroid of a Cartier ring.
