Bungie will enable an experimental duos queue in Marathon on Wednesday, March 18 at 10am PT. The mode will run on a single map, Perimeter, for around two weeks and may be removed or retained depending on player feedback.

The community has pushed for a duos option since the sever slam in February, and Bungie described the addition as a limited test inviting players to help evaluate it. Duos can be a handy option when you have exactly one friend to play with, but the developer is treating the change as a significant undertaking.

Altering squad size affects how maps flow and how players behave on them. It’s not clear how loot scales with player count, and duos might also change the density of supplies in compounds.

Matchmaking already splits into six pools (soon to be eight with Cryo Archive) by letting solos and squads pick which of the three maps to play. Introducing duos would add another set of queues and could influence wait times, which Bungie is likely looking to measure during the test.
