Bungie says it has taken lessons from Destiny 2’s content vault and does not plan a similar approach for Marathon, creative director Julia Nardin told Space.com. The studio has shown a clear commitment to Marathon’s lore: a strong voice cast, faction representatives offering contracts, and a community ARG that unlocked the Cryo Archives map.

There is story and world-building for players to explore, and Bungie intends for that material to remain accessible. Marathon will still use seasonal rotations. Each season on the roadmap lasts about three months and resets faction and gear progress, while Codex unlocks and cosmetics persist; the seasonal cycle is mandatory.

That approach raises concerns as the game grows. Adding new contracts over time could force players to revisit old material to access future quests; retreading contracts has already proved divisive, and mandatory repetition could become a significant issue.
