Burger King has updated its signature Whopper for the first time in a decade, giving it a new bun, creamier mayonnaise, and cardboard packaging designed to keep the burger from being squashed during transit. The change followed customer complaints about smashed Whoppers; "So the Whopper being smushed, literally, I've heard it… and we've seen it," Tom Curtis, president of Burger King in the US and Canada, told CNN when the chain announced the packaging change on February 26.

A reviewer who tried the "elevated" Whopper found the bun thicker and shinier, the mayo more flavorful, and the sandwich better at holding together while retaining the familiar flame-grilled patty and toppings. The reviewer also noted the new version was cheaper at her Brooklyn location — $9.17 for a Whopper with cheese on February 14 versus $8.58 on February 27 — and that Burger King recommended franchisees not raise prices.
