Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany says his experience as a player has helped him coach Harry Kane. Kane has thrived since making the switch from Tottenham, scoring a double on Saturday to take his Bundesliga tally for the season to 28. Christian Streich, working as a TV expert at the Allianz Arena, asked about Kane's habit of dropping into midfield to shape play and make defensive tackles.

Kompany said he deliberately gives Kane freedom: "I always try to take my players' profiles into account. Harry is incredibly smart. Of course, he has his specific role when it comes to defending. But when we have possession, it's 50 per cent coaching and 50 per cent simply trusting the player to do the right thing." Kompany drew on his own time as a defender, recalling that he often faced Kane at Manchester City and did not see those qualities because Kane played on the highest line.

"And that was actually quite easy for me to defend against – but don't tell Harry that," he laughed.
