China’s BYD sold more electric cars in 2025 than Tesla, ending Tesla’s run as the world’s biggest seller of electric vehicles after Congress and President Trump eliminated federal tax credits that had encouraged Americans to buy those cars. Tesla said its car sales fell 16 percent in the last three months of 2025 and declined 9 percent for the full year; the company delivered 1.64 million cars in 2025, down from almost 1.8 million in 2024, and fourth-quarter deliveries dropped to 418,000 from 496,000 a year earlier.

BYD said it sold 2.26 million electric cars globally in 2025, up 28 percent from 2024, with a growing share of sales outside China. The policy shift included the end of tax credits of up to $7,500 and a White House effort to roll back clean air rules, moves the article said hit Tesla particularly hard because it accounts for about 45 percent of the U.S.

electric-vehicle market. The end of incentives prompted a rush to buy cars before they expired and a steep November drop in EV sales, according to Cox Automotive, and has led some automakers to cut prices and introduce lower-cost models. Industry analysts cited in the report expect U.S.

EV sales to be tepid in 2026 but to rebound in 2027 as more models under $30,000 reach the market.
