Byron Howard Teases Encanto Sequel Five Years On
Byron Howard says the team behind Encanto is quietly working toward another film, noting that "The amazing thing about movies is they generally take about five years to make." He added there is overlap among producer Yvette Merino, co-director Jared Bush and much of the crew — including on Zootopia 2 — which leads to "a strategy of how do you overlap the projects as they get done?" Howard called making the first Encanto "this amazing experience" and said he would like to see a follow-up released when theatres are not burdened by pandemic restrictions.
"To be making a movie about a dozen people in a house together, was incredible, and I'd love to see an Encanto film go out into the world, into theaters in a time that wasn't burdened by pandemic, and quarantine, and stuff like that. But we have a deep, deep love for Encanto." Encanto follows Mirabel, a Colombian girl whose Madrigal family members each receive a magical gift except her; she becomes the family's last hope when the Encanto's magic is threatened.
