Cancelled LucasArts Star Wars shooter playable online for the first time
When Disney bought and then shuttered LucasArts in 2013, it cancelled two Star Wars projects: action-adventure 1313 and a multiplayer FPS called First Assault, in which players would team up as rebels or stormtroopers and trade laser fire in film-style battles.
Footage on YouTube suggests First Assault is now playable online, and a public Discord has appeared for anyone who wants to join. The clips come from planned beta tests, implying a team of modders has been working to get the game running and either believes it is legally safe to operate or is willing to risk a challenge, since Disney now own the license.
The build looks a little juddery but shows chunky, grounded combat and a detailed rendition of Tatooine’s sandy streets: ships lift off in the background, dense structures create interesting layouts, and the footage demonstrates several classes and weapons. Similar clips have circulated since 2015 (Eurogamer, via Time Extension), but this is the first time real players appear able to log on and play together over the internet.
