Capcom adds Enigma Protector DRM to Steam ports of Dino Crisis 1 and 2
Capcom announced on February 12 that the first two Dino Crisis games—1999’s Dino Crisis and its 2000 sequel—are now available on Steam. The titles originally released for the PlayStation 1 more than 25 years ago and are being offered on Steam with a launch discount of 50% until February 26.
Players quickly noticed the Steam editions include Enigma Protector DRM. That prompted complaints on the Steam forums, with one user asking, “DRM on a 27-year-old game? Really? What’s wrong with these guys?”
Others pointed out this is the same DRM recently added to the Resident Evil 4 remake, which caused performance problems for many PC users. Critics say applying the same protection to these older ports risks similar issues.
Those concerns are sharpened by the fact that the same Dino Crisis versions are available DRM-free on GOG. Many players say they will purchase the GOG releases instead until the Steam builds’ DRM is removed.
