A wave of violence after the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes has disrupted travel in several Mexican cities popular with U.S. tourists, prompting flight cancellations, roadblocks, cruise changes and U.S. government “shelter in place” alerts. The disruptions have centered on Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, though unrest has spread to other states.

The U.S. State Department issued advisories for destinations including Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Tijuana, Cancún and Cozumel, and later said “the situation has returned to normal” in Quintana Roo, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas. Travelers in some areas reported gunfire, explosions and burned vehicles, and chaos at Guadalajara International Airport forced people to flee while taxis and ride shares were suspended in Puerto Vallarta.

Several major U.S. carriers, including Alaska, American, Delta and United, canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara and waived change fees for affected itineraries; passengers should check with their airlines.
