Convention season 2026 has begun, and photography collective Mineralblu returned to the cosplay halls for Katsucon, the three-day event near Washington, DC that celebrates fans, entertainment and Japanese culture. Katsucon, which calls itself “for multicultural enthusiasts,” is held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside DC, and has run in some form since 1995.

It’s one of the smaller, more intimate events on the cosplay calendar but still attracts guests such as Justin Briner and Michelle Rojas. The weekend includes a large Saturday Masquerade on the first night and a lower-key judged event for those who prefer not to parade on stage.

New year, new themes: 2025’s Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, Arcane and Elden Ring gave way to 2026’s Dispatch, Expedition 33, It Takes Two and even Peak, while staples like Naruto, Zelda and League of Legends made their customary appearances.
