Chelsea lost ground in the race for the Champions League as Anthony Gordon's goal earned Newcastle a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge. The Blues huffed and puffed but looked far from their best; Joao Pedro offered little threat while substitute Liam Delap missed a huge chance to equalise.

The Magpies' first-half winner followed a severe lapse by Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana that allowed Joe Willock to run in behind, and Gordon tapped in unchallenged. Chelsea had begun strongly — Fofana headed onto the roof from a Reece James corner and Cole Palmer saw a fizzing drive fly just past the top corner — but the opener came against the run of play.

Delap's introduction after the break brought greater threat, yet he skied a gilt-edged chance and saw a glancing header drift just wide. Robert Sanchez and Aaron Ramsdale made saves at either end; Palmer and Chalobah had late efforts, Pedro looped an attempt over the bar and James struck the post in stoppage time.
