NBC's long-running Chicago P.D. focuses on the Intelligence Unit of the 21st District, led for 13 seasons by Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). The series also relies on relationships such as Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek's romance and the steady presence of Officer Kevin Atwater, while other characters have come and gone over the years.

Sophia Bush's Detective Erin Lindsay arrived with a complicated past: she "came from the street," turned up as Voight's confidential informant and was taken in by him and his wife. Bush mined that history for depth, carrying Lindsay through personal trials, a relapse and a notorious incident in which she allegedly forced information by "sticking her gun down his throat — a Voight move if there ever was one," after which Voight arranged for her to be recruited into a New York narcotics unit.
