Chloé Zhao Responds to Buffy Reboot Cancellation, Teases 'Welcome the Mystery'

Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed over the weekend that Hulu will not move forward with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. Gellar had been set to reprise Buffy Summers and serve as a producer, and Chloé Zhao was attached as a director and producer; Zhao won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars for her Nomadland.

Zhao said she had "an incredible, incredible time" with Gellar and the cast and crew, adding that they see themselves as "the guardians of the original show." She said their priority "has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans." Striking a hopeful note, Zhao teased, "So, things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open and we welcome the mystery.
