Christina Applegate writes in her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, about “dangerous” and “scary” weight loss during her battle with multiple sclerosis. She says she didn’t look in the mirror for a year after initially gaining weight, then lost “50 pounds or more” within seven months after being put on a clear‑liquid diet, leaving her legs “tinier than they’ve ever been.” Applegate describes serious stomach issues caused by MS and the constant fear that eating could land her in the ER.

“As I write this, there are tamales downstairs that are the best tamales you could ever have – I want to eat five of them right now, I’m so hungry – but I know if I do, I’ll probably end up in the ER again,” she writes. She says the illness has left her with virtually no muscle in her legs — “I have no muscles – just sticks” — and worries that unprotected bones make falling especially dangerous.
