Christopher Nolan's 10/10 Crime Thriller 'Memento' Lands New Streaming Home
HBO Max has just added the revenge thriller Memento to its streaming lineup.
Adapted from Jonathan Nolan's short story Memento Mori, the film unfolds in reverse: it opens with Leonard (Guy Pearce) killing Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) and then moves backward through a narrative in which Leonard, who cannot form new memories, depends on tattoos and Polaroids.
As the story progresses, Leonard is revealed to be manipulated by Teddy and may already have found his wife's killer, leaving the tattoos and photographs to deepen the uncertainty until the ending—which is actually the original beginning—answers many questions.
Memento proved Nolan's skill at ambitious, small-scale filmmaking after Following and before his larger studio projects; it runs 113 minutes, was released October 11, 2000, and often rewards repeated viewings.
