Cillian Murphy’s Netflix Comeback Tops Charts With Peaky Blinders Film
Following his Best Actor Oscar, Cillian Murphy has had three post-award releases. Only Small Things Like These received a traditional theatrical run and made little impact. Two others went straight to Netflix: Steve underperformed, but Murphy’s second Netflix release has drawn a much larger audience.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man earned positive reviews and received a limited theatrical run in the U.K. before debuting on Netflix on March 20. It was the number one movie across Netflix on its opening day, both domestically and worldwide, and FlixPatrol shows it displaced Alan Ritchson’s War Machine from the streamer’s top spot.
A report suggested Netflix might have made as much as $50 million in the U.K. with a fuller theatrical release rather than the token run it gave the film. In its first weekend in British cinemas, The Immortal Man outgrossed Scream 7 and The Bride!, despite those films playing in many more venues.
