A reader, AR of Bognor Regis, West Sussex, says they received a penalty charge notice after parking at Cineworld in Chichester to see Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is more than three hours long.

AR said they had watched the previous two Avatar films at the site without problems. Cineworld told AR customers should enter their vehicle registration on a screen on arrival, but AR said they saw no notice to that effect, and booking confirmation emails make no mention of the requirement.

Customers in other areas have been caught out when the landowner reduced the maximum parking allowance from four hours to three on some sites; the change in Chichester took place last summer and signs displaying the new limit are in the car park, although regulars may not notice them.

Cineworld said it does not own or manage the car park and that signs advise customers of the new rules. Despite saying it had no responsibility for PCNs, it cancelled AR’s notice after the Guardian got in touch.
