Clintons refuse to testify in GOP Epstein probe and face contempt threat
Bill and Hillary Clinton refused to testify in a Republican-led House probe into Jeffrey Epstein, the Independent.co reports. House Oversight Committee chair James Comer told reporters Tuesday that the committee intends to hold them in contempt of Congress next week.
In an eight-page letter to Comer the Clintons called the subpoenas "invalid and legally unenforceable" and wrote that "every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences." They said they had already supplied Comer with sworn statements given to law enforcement and accused him of working harder to hold them in contempt than to pursue an investigation into Epstein's crimes and the government's alleged failures to hold him and others to account.
The Justice Department has begun publishing thousands of images and documents from investigations last month, including hundreds of undated and heavily redacted photographs that, the report says, have not shed new light on Epstein's crimes or connections. The Clintons noted they have never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and warned Republicans would "release irrelevant, decades-old photos" intended to embarrass them; Comer has said he will move forward with contempt next week.
