Cloud Imperium discloses January data breach, players criticise disclosure
Cloud Imperium has reported a data breach following a 'systematic and sophisticated attack', saying it resulted in unauthorised access to some backup systems and limited access to users' personal data. The studio posted the notice on the Roberts Space Industries website, stating that on 21 January 2026 CIG was targeted.
The company says it does not believe the breach constitutes a safety risk and that no financial or payment information was taken. CIG says it acted quickly to contain the activity, block further access to the data and CIG systems, and refreshed security settings to ensure there is no threat to its games or users.
The disclosure drew criticism for how quietly and how long it took to be revealed, though some supporters argued six weeks can be a reasonable period in incidents like this. The piece notes it took months for the Notepad++ breach to come to light, while Insomniac informed the public within a week.
