Colbert criticises federal immigration deployment to Minnesota on Late Show
On The Late Show Tuesday night, host Stephen Colbert criticised the Trump administration's deployment of more than 2,000 federal immigration agents to Minnesota, saying the Department of Homeland Security plans to deploy 1,000 more despite Minneapolis officials urging them to leave.
Colbert opened with a quip about the scale of the operation, saying, "So he's clearly invading Minnesota. Has anyone told him that they don't have oil? Because the best he’s going to get is 50 million barrels of cream of mushroom soup."
He framed the deployment amid nationwide protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement after the killing of 37-year-old mother Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis last week, calling the incident "just the latest and most horrifying abuse of that great city by Homeland Security." Colbert also cited social media footage of ICE officers pulling people from vehicles, raiding homes and schools and "both threatening and then delivering violence," and referenced a viral clip of an officer "absolutely eatin' duke."
Protests have spread across America, and the Department of Homeland Security has said it will send an additional 1,000 agents to Minnesota.
