The coldest temperature ever recorded in every state
A severe blizzard rolled through the Northeast last weekend, dumping up to 2 feet of snow in some areas, just weeks after Winter Storm Fern struck the region. Despite such brutal cold snaps, the planet overall continues to warm, and only three states have set their all-time lows in the 21st century.
The coldest temperature recorded in the United States was −80°F at Prospect Creek Camp in Alaska on January 23, 1971. Since records began, every state except Hawaii has fallen below zero degrees Fahrenheit; Hawaii’s lowest reported temperature is 12°F at the Mauna Kea Observatory on May 17, 1979.
NOAA’s State Climate Extremes Committee compiled the state-by-state lows, which include Alabama’s −27°F at New Market on January 30, 1966, California’s −45°F in Boca on January 20, 1937, and Arizona’s −40°F at Hawley Lake on January 7, 1971, among many others.
