Congress defies Trump on tariffs amid his ongoing spat with Canada — Businessinsider

The House voted 219 to 211 to block President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, passing a resolution from Rep. Gregory Meeks to rescind levies imposed under a national-emergency declaration. Six Republicans joined Democrats in the rebuke; one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, opposed the measure.

The resolution now heads to the Senate. Republican leaders had tried to prevent debate, but three GOP lawmakers allowed the effort to proceed. Trump publicly warned House and Senate Republicans that those who oppose the tariffs would ‘‘seriously suffer the consequences’’ at election time, including in primaries.

Supporters of overturning the tariffs argued the levies raise costs for American families. Meeks framed the vote as a choice to lower the cost of living rather than remain loyal to one person, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said GOP attempts to block action were protecting the president while tariffs ‘‘are causing prices to skyrocket and creating unnecessary uncertainty for American families.’’ Rep.
