PsiQuantum has broken ground on a 1 million‑qubit facility in Chicago, moving closer to its goal of building a useful quantum computer. Co‑founder Peter Shadbolt posted a photo of the site, saying 500 tons of steel were erected in six days to house the machine.

The company said it raised $1 billion in September to build the facility in collaboration with Nvidia. PsiQuantum added the site is designed to hold quantum computers that can function even if they have errors and would house 1 million qubits — the equivalent of tens of billions of typical computers — to support “next‑generation AI supercomputers.” Some in the Bitcoin community warn large‑scale quantum computers could compromise Bitcoin’s cryptography and put the network at risk, while others, including Blockstream CEO Adam Back, say such a threat is unlikely for at least a decade.

Bitcoin developers are discussing whether to take immediate action via a hard fork, and unspent transaction output (UTXO) wallets are considered most vulnerable.
