Controversial RoboCop Remake Lands on Free Streaming
The 2014 RoboCop remake, criticized for stripping away much of the original's satire and dark humor, is now available to stream for free on Tubi. Reception for the remake was mixed: it holds a 50% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes versus the original's 88%, and audience ratings dropped from 84% to 49%.
One sequence about 30 minutes in has drawn praise — Joel Kinnaman's Murphy wakes as a fully realized cyborg, escapes, and later returns to Dr. Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) in a CGI-heavy reveal that shows what remains of him. Many viewers point to that moment as the film's standout.
The remake also reshaped key plot points: Peter Weller's Alex Murphy in 1987 is murdered by Clarence Boddicker and converted with no memory, while the 2014 Murphy is blown apart by a car bomb yet remembers his wife and son. The film was released February 12, 2014, runs 118 minutes, and was directed by José Padilha.
