Corey Cott on Griffin’s Most Personal SVU Episode
Season 27’s "Frequency" opens with a family picking up a rogue baby-monitor frequency and finding a young boy kept in a dog kennel. The SVU team uses the monitor to try to contact the child but must avoid alerting the kidnapper while they work to triangulate his location.
Detective Jake Griffin becomes especially driven after noticing similarities between the missing child, Avery, and his late brother. Griffin tells Captain Olivia Benson that his brother with autism died in a car crash; as a child the brother rubbed his head so much he developed a bald spot.
Seeing the boy rubbing his arm on surveillance leads Griffin to suspect Avery may be neurodivergent, and he draws on a childhood system of signs to communicate. Asking Avery to touch his nose or forehead for yes/no answers proves the crucial method to confirm the boy's identity.
