I picked up crochet for the first time this year after a friend bought me a neat little kit that contains everything you need in a can. My first project was a shrimp, and it proved surprisingly challenging: the instructions were hard to follow, it took many tries and several YouTube tutorials, and what I ended up with could only vaguely be described as a shrimp.

I’ve come to appreciate the hours people put into massive crochet projects, and a scroll through r/GeekyCrochet shows the range from plushies to accessories for humans and animals. Instagram user Tobicrochets has made a number of pieces almost entirely from yarn. One standout is a Madoka Magica cosplay made exclusively from crochet aside from the socks and shoes, with every layer and embellishment formed from yarn.
