The authority that runs Naplan apologised unreservedly after a technical disruption stopped some students from logging on to the online platform for writing assessments on the first day. Acara’s chief executive, Stephen Gniel, said the issue was identified at 9.20am and schools were asked to pause testing for more than a million students while the glitch was investigated.

An education expert described the situation as a “really unfortunate mess”. Gniel said the problem was fixed by technology provider Education Services Australia at about 11.15am and that schools were told at 11.30am they could resume testing. Some schools proceeded while others elected to postpone assessments.

He thanked test administration authorities in each state and territory, who work with more than 9,400 schools, for resuming testing and supporting students, but said he was unable to say how many students had been affected.
