OpenAI founder Andrej Karpathy marked the first anniversary of 'vibe-coding' by introducing a new term: 'agentic engineering.' He defines vibe-coding as prompting AI to write code and describes agentic engineering as AI agents writing the code themselves. "Many people have tried to come up with a better name for this to differentiate it from vibe coding, personally, my current favorite is 'agentic engineering,'" he wrote on X, adding he calls it that not just because agents are writing the code, but because "there is an art & science and expertise to it." Vibe-coding has reshaped the tech industry, prompting adoption by CEOs and startup founders and attracting billions in investment.

Lovable said it raised $330 million in a Series B at a $6.6 billion valuation in December, and Cursor announced a $2.3 billion Series D in November and said it had surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue. The approach is also threatening traditional engineering jobs.
