Criminal Record Is a Perfect Binge Before Season 2 Returns
Apple TV has quietly become a television force, and Criminal Record — which debuted in early 2024 — slipped through the cracks despite rivaling many acclaimed crime shows. With Season 2 returning on April 22, the inaugural eight-episode season is an ideal binge to catch up on before the new episodes arrive.
Created by Paul Rutman, the series stars Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo as seasoned detective Daniel Hegarty and the young wunderkind June Lenker. An anonymous phone call reopens the 24-year sentence of Errol Mathis, convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, and June’s re-investigation draws her into a bitter feud with Hegarty.
Rather than treating the whodunit as the sole focus, the show foregrounds Great Britain’s complicated history with racial bias and the disproportionate incarceration of Black people. June’s struggle as a Black female detective in a largely white, male workforce drives much of the tension and underscores the story’s broader implications.
