There’s an old-fashioned videogame hype train forming around Crimson Desert after a recent preview described it as one of the most overstimulating games Harvey has ever played. Crimson Desert began life as a prequel to Black Desert Online, which has been consistently popular since its release over a decade ago.

It’s only the second big game from Korean developer Pearl Abyss, which acquired EVE Online maker CCP Games in 2018. The Steam page calls it an “open-world action-adventure,” though “kitchen sink action RPG” might be a better fit. The preview lists Breath of the Wild-style cooking, cutting down trees for lumber, GTA-style bounties, gambling and wrestling minigames, faction reputation and bounty hunts, clearing outposts, fishing, and—according to someone a couple stations over—bribing members of the church.

For what purpose? It is unclear. There’s appetite for a huge open-world game right now, especially after Grand Theft Auto 6’s delays.
